Rye – Victoria
For this project, Graeme Alexander Homes built a home 400 metres from the beach on a vacant 962m² block, at Rye on Mornington Peninsula. The land was part of a 1788m² block containing the clients’ old family home, where they enjoyed a great deal of summers while growing up. The siblings decided to remove the old home and divide the larger block, separating it with the plan to build three small beach homes. The clients had a comprehensive list of criteria for the new home, as they wanted their extended family to be able to enjoy the lifestyle they had loved so much themselves. The wish of the clients was to create a place that could accommodate the owners as a retirement home, with enough room to cater for the extended family – including all their toys – on weekends and during the holidays. They also still wanted to retain an unobtrusive beach home feel. Many of the existing Moonah trees at the rear of the L-shaped property were to be retained and the new entertaining area was designed to blend into its canopy.
The main living areas and main bedroom were kept on the upper floor, which was designed to be just under a flight of stairs above the entry level. This upper floor area has a spacious open-plan living and entertaining space with the dining, family and kitchen spaces opening directly onto the north-facing balcony deck. The deck is covered under the main roofline and provides a tranquil area to enjoy a barbecue with family. With ample space for the extended family, two bedrooms and a bathroom were positioned on the entry level, leaving the lower floor to house two more bedrooms, a bathroom, sitting room, games room, laundry and study. The carport was dug in and a lockable storage unit was added to one side of the carport. A combination of factors helps this home blend into its surroundings. These include the separation of extra accommodation areas, digging the home into the land, re-shaping the sandy block, splitting the levels and softening the pitch. These design features, complemented by a light paint colour and natural timber posts, disguise the bulk of the home and help it maintain its simple, beach-feel.
